Sheridan To Sell Pittsburgh Trio

R&R has confirmed that Sheridan Broadcasting will sell its Pittsburgh trio -- urban AC/urban combo WAMO-AM & FM and gospel WPGR-AM -- to St. Joseph's Missions. The announcement was made during a full staff meeting on Friday afternoon (May 15) by CEO Ronald Davenport Sr.

While Sheridan will keep its network businesses, all of the cluster's 35 full- and part-time employees will exit as the stations flip to what some speculate will be some kind of religious format.

Sheridan Broadcasting bought WAMO-AM in 1973. Two months ago, Davenport Sr. appeared on a Capitol Hill panel of African-American broadcasters, including Radio One chairwoman Cathy Hughes and CEO Alfred Liggins and nationally syndicated morning host Tom Joyner, that briefed congressional staff about the pending Performance Rights Act. Davenport testified that the pending legislation would force some minority broadcasters out of business.

Sheridan also owns and operates WATV-AM/Birmingham and WUFO-AM/Buffalo. The company headquarters are expected to remain in Pittsburgh.
