As part of its efforts to reduce expenses, CHUM Radio took out 40 positions on Thursday (Feb. 26) -- 17 people were let go, and 23 vacant positions will not be filled.

While specific names haven't been released, CHUM confirmed that the cutbacks will affect its stations in Victoria, British Columbia; Vancouver; Edmonton; Winnipeg; London, Ontario; Toronto; Peterborough, Ontario; Ottawa; and Montreal.

"Today's announcement is a consequence of the decline in advertising revenue, as a result of the current economic climate," said CHUM Radio president Chris Gordon. "We are proud to be the leaders in most of the 16 markets that we serve, and, while these actions are necessary, our focus continues to be on our listeners and advertisers across Canada."
